The Gospel of John includes teachings of Jesus that begin with the words, I am. In each case, Jesus uses a tangible symbol to show us the meaning of his life and ministry. Bread of Life. The Way. Living Water. Light of the World. New Life. King of Kings. Risen One. These names for Jesus help us picture him at work in our lives today, too.

Name of Jesus is a seven-week Lenten faith formation resource for the whole congregation. Each week offers a black and white, 4-page devotional including art and scripture that can be used in worship, education, and at home, based on texts from Lectionary Year A:

•     Lent 1: Bread of Life (Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus’ temptation invites us to think about the satisfaction only God can provide.

•     Lent 2: The Way (John 3:1-17). In Jesus, Nicodemus discovers both question and answer; a yearning and a way to follow.

•     Lent 3: Living Water (John 4:5-42). Jesus offers the Samaritan woman  an everlasting source of joy and freedom.

•     Lent 4: Light of the World (John 9:1-41). What could light mean to one who has never before seen it? For the man whose sight is restored, it means that nothing will ever be the same.

•     Lent 5: New Life (John 11:1-45). Lazarus’s miraculous rising pushes us to embrace Jesus’ new life and our own.

•     Lent 6: King of Kings (Matthew 21:1-11). Jesus’ royal welcome is the briefest of earthly triumphs, but it hints at eternal victory.

•     Easter: Risen One (Matthew 28:1-10). We understand Jesus, the risen one, as we return to Galilee and see him again; teaching, healing, forgiving, and restoring.
